I was wondering because I'm interested in singing up…

And what is the game really about? Details on what you need to do to win. [Please.]

Evony is free to sign up, free to play.

There are ways of advancing your kingdom through spending real money on evony cents. These are described here http://www.evonyfreeforever.com/evony-money/

The game can be played without spending any money, and you can be high ranked on the game without spending any money. I haven't spent any money and I'm ranked 213 on server 3.
